| Hu Jintao Meets with Spanish Parliament Leaders |

On the morning of November 14, 2005, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Speaker of the Spanish House of Representatives Manuel Marín González and Speaker of the Senate Francisco Javier Rojo García. At the meeting, Hu briefed them on current smooth development of bilateral friendly cooperation. He noted that during this visit, both sides issued a joint communiqué and declared the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership, which marks that bilateral relations have entered a new development stage. China would like to strengthen strategic dialogue with Spain, build up mutual political trust, earnestly implement various cooperation agreements and continuously tap cooperation potential in the areas of economy and trade, science and technology, culture, education, tourism and judicature. Hu indicated that the Spanish Parliament has paid attention to and supported developing relations with China for a long period of time, actively conducted exchanges and cooperation with the National People's Congress (NPC) of China and has become an important force for pushing for development of bilateral relations. It is hoped that the legislatures of both sides will conduct more exchanges, learn from each other and make new contributions to promoting bilateral friendly cooperation. At last Hu emphasized that there is no fundamental conflict of interests, but broad common interest between both sides. On the road of developing their respective countries, safeguarding world peace and promoting common development, both sides should and can fully become more close cooperation partners. China would like to work with the Spanish parliament, government and people to continue pushing for all-round and in-depth development of bilateral relations in a bid to bring benefits to both peoples. On behalf of Speaker of the Senate Rojo and other members of leading committee of both Houses present at the meeting, Speaker of the House of Representatives Marín indicated that China's rapid development is admirable. While complex changes are undergoing in the world situation, China's adherence to the road of peaceful development is of great significance to safeguarding world peace. All the parties in the Spanish Parliament advocate enhanced bilateral cooperation in various areas. The two Houses of Parliament will jointly form a delegation for a visit to China early next year in a bid to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China's legislature. Prior to the meeting, Marín and Rojo held a welcoming ceremony for Hu. |
