Wu Bangguo Meets with Cambodian King Sihamoni

On August 12, 2005, Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with King of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni in the Great Hall of the People.

Wu said that China and Cambodia are close neighbors enjoying an over-2000-year history of friendly exchanges. The Chinese leaders of the past several generations highly value the friendship with Cambodia. China-Cambodia relations have achieved substantive progress in the new century. The leaders of the two countries maintain frequent exchanges of visits, with mutual understanding and trust constantly consolidated. The cooperation in such fields as economy and trade has yielded positive results. The two countries support and work closely with each other on major international and regional issues. Wu added that China-Cambodia relations are facing important opportunities for development. The Chinese side appreciates Cambodia for actively promoting the relationship with China and is willing to advance the pragmatic cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

Wu said that the NPC of China and the Cambodian parliament maintain friendly exchanges at all levels. Both sides have conducted good coordination and collaboration in international and regional parliamentary organizations. The NPC is willing to strengthen the exchanges and cooperation with the Cambodian parliament and make new contributions to the comprehensive growth of bilateral relations.

Sihamoni said that with the direct care and meticulous cultivation by the leaders of both countries, the ever-deepening Cambodia-China relations have brought tangible benefits to the Cambodian people. The history of Cambodia-China friendship is long lasting and goes deep into the heart of the two peoples. The Cambodian people treat the Chinese people as an eternal friend and thank the Chinese people for their generous support and help. The Cambodian side will always pursue the one-China policy and firmly oppose Taiwan independence. The royal family and people of Cambodia would like to inherit the traditional friendship with China and strive to raise the bilateral friendly and cooperative relations to new heights. Sihamoni said that the Cambodian parliament gives top priority to and actively supports the exchanges and cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries in a bid to promote the comprehensive growth of bilateral relations.
