China and the United States Hold the 1st Strategic Dialogue
2005/08/01

On August 1, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo and US Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick held the first China-US strategic dialogue in Beijing and had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on China-US relations as well as major regional and international issues of common concern. Both sides agreed that the dialogue is helpful and constructive and has enhanced mutual understanding. Both sides reaffirmed that the stable, healthy and long-term development of China-US relations conforms to the interests of the two peoples and countries. Maintaining and expanding the cooperation between the two countries is of great significance to promoting the existing and future peace, stability, and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world. Both the United States and China will take active measures to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthen dialogues, enhance mutual trusts, develop cooperation, and properly handle differences in the hope to propel the constant development of bilateral constructive cooperative relations.

The dialogue was held in accordance with the consensus reached by Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Bush during their meeting in November last year in San Diego, Chile. Both sides decided to hold the 2nd strategic dialogue in a couple of months in the United States.
