Chinese Embassy in Lesotho Held Chinese Bridge Preliminary Competition & My China Story 2018 Awarding Ceremony

On 25 August 2018, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China and the Confucius Classroom at the Machabeng College co-hosted the Preliminary Contest in Lesotho of the 11th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency competition and the awarding ceremony of the writing contest My China Story 2018. H.E. Dr. Sun Xianghua, Ambassador of China to Lesotho, Political Counsellor Mr. Song Changqing, Economic and Commercial Counsellor Mr. Ma Guoliang, Hon. Mothepu Mahapa, Deputy Minister of Education, Directors of the Confucius Classroom Mr. Thatho Pontso and Mr. Yu Ji attended the event.

Ambassador Sun indicated in his keynote remarks that in the recent years, the China-Africa and China-Lesotho relations are developing from strength to strength with the people to people and cultural exchanges booming unprecedentedly. This year marks the second year for both the Chinese Bridge and the My China Story competitions. More and more Basotho started to learn Chinese and explore and tell about China. With this momentum, the bridge of China-Lesotho friendship and exchanges are become wider and wider. Ambassador Sun pointed out that the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) is convening soon, on which new measures of China-Africa cooperation will be announced. The outcomes of the Summit will foster a strategic synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) of China and the Agenda 2063 of the African Union, and build an even stronger China-Africa Community with a shared future. With these outcomes, the China-Africa Comprehensive Strategic and Cooperative Partnership will be ushered into a new era, the China Dream and the Africa Dream featured by national rejuvenation will be fulfilled by both sides as well.

Hon. Mahapa extended congratulations to the competitors and the winners. He pointed out that the government of Lesotho attaches great importance to developing educational and cultural cooperation with China, and wishes to further promote Chinese language teaching in the curriculum of Lesotho for more young Basotho to learn Chinese language and deepen China-Lesotho friendship.

14 students from the Machabeng college attended the Chinese Bridge Competition, staging speeches on Chinese cultural elements including the traditional Chinese medicine, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Chinese Zodiacs and the Spring Festival. They participated quizz about Chinese history and culture, performed paper-cut, traditional Chinese martial art and dance, Chinese poems and pop songs. The My China Story 2018, containing 21 stories about Basotho's encounters and reflections on their study trips to China, the friendship between Basotho and the Chinese compatriots in Lesotho and the impacts of China-Lesotho practical cooperation, etc, was launched on the event. Ambassador Sun, Hon. Mahapa and other dignitaries awarded prizes to participants of both the competitions.

A warm and happy atmosphere with laughs and applause from time to time permeated the whole occasion. The LTV, LENA and mainstream newspapers reported on the function.
