The Chinese Embassy held 2nd Chinese Movie Festival

From 18 to 20 May, 2018, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Lesotho and the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture of Lesotho co-hosted the 2nd Chinese Movie Festival in Maseru. H.E. Dr. SUN Xianghua, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Lesotho, Hon. Mamonaheng Mokitimi, President of the Senate and her Vice President Hon. Ts'epo Monethi , Minister of Culture Hon. Motlohi Maliehe, Minister of Water Hon. Samonyane Ntsekele, Minister of Police Hon. Mampho Mokhele, Minister of Forestry Hon. Mamotsie Motsie, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Machesetsa Mofomobe, Members of Parliament, Foreign Diplomatic Corps and the Chinese Community attended the opening ceremony of the festival and watched the first movie.


In his remark at the opening ceremony, H.E. Dr. SUN Xianghua said "Motion pictures not only tell stories, but also record and reflect different counties' and people's history, philosophy, mentality, values, aspirations and lifestyles." He indicated for over 100 years, the Chinese motion picture industry has walked an extraordinary development path. "The Chinese motion picture industry has grown from strength to strength both by learning from their counterparts in other countries and by contributing their ingenuity and distinct features." Now, it has become one of the world's biggest movie market and main contributor of the increase of the box office sales of the world, "thus making an important contribution to the diversification of the movie culture of the world." He believed that this movie festival will provide an important platform to enhance bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges and could open a window for the Basotho people to better understand the Chinese people and their lives.


Hon. Motlohi Maliehe appreciated the unremitting efforts made by the Chinese Embassy to enhance the cultural exchanges between Lesotho and China. He indicated that motion picture industry of Lesotho is still a developing culture part, and Basotho people will pay more attention to the development of motion picture industry through the holding of Chinese movie festival. The Lesotho side wish to cooperate with her Chinese partner to facilitate the collaboration and exchange in Culture area.


The President of Motion Pictures Association of Lesotho, Ms. Mpho Letima highly praised the achievement of the Chinese motion picture industry and appealed to strengthen the cooperation in this field between the two countries and to organize more cultural exchanging activities like the Chinese Movie Festival.


Four Chinese Movies were screened during this festival including Nightingale, My Avatar Horse, Confucius and Dragon Blade. More than 1700 Basotho audiences enjoyed these movies. The festival was reported by mainstream media of Lesotho.
