China-Lesotho People-to-People Friendship Action Fund Provided Donation to Maseru Poverty-stricken Students

On 17th February 2017, the China-Lesotho People-to-people Friendship Action Fund (CLPPFAF) donated a new batch of school-fee assistance as well as school-bags and sports equipments to 40 students respectively from the Masowe and the Lesia High Schools in Maseru. Over 500 people including Chinese Ambassador H.E. Dr. Sun Xianghua, the board of CLPPFAF, Hon. Motlalentoa Letsosa, Minister of Education and Training, Hon. Mamphono Khaketla, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Chief of Ha Tikoe, teachers and students of the high schools as well as journalists attended the ceremony.

The CLPPFAF was established by the Chinese Community in Lesotho with the support of the Chinese Embassy. It has subsidized the above-mentioned high school students for 3 consecutive years, with an overall financial support over 100,000 Maloti.

Ambassador Sun indicated in his speech that both the Chinese and Basotho Governments attach great importance to development of education, and carried out broad cooperation in the regard. Over the years, the Chinese government has given over 300 government scholarships to Basotho young people to study in China, and also received over 2000 Basotho in various training programs in China. Ambassador Sun encouraged the students to seize the opportunity of continuing study, and make contributions to the development of their homeland. Ambassador Sun also extended appreciations to CLPPFAF and the Chinese Community for their donations, commending them for treating Lesotho as their home away from home, increasingly giving back to local society and contributing to Lesotho social and economic development. 

Hon. Letsosa spoke highly of the China-Lesotho cooperation in education. He thanked the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Community for sponsoring the poverty-stricken students who are on the edge of dropout from school. He also appealed to the students that they should hold tight the study opportunity, work hard and change the poverty-haunted fate.

     On the ceremony, Ambassador Sun and Mr. Chen Kehui, Chairman of CLPPFAF also donated a batch of school-bags and footballs to the sponsored students and the schools. The students recited poems and performed songs expressing their joy and appreciation.
