On Friday 09th December 2016, the Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho HE. Dr. Sun Xianghua attended a handover ceremony on which the Chinese Medical team donated a batch of medical equipment and drugs to the Motebang Hospital of Leribe. Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Hon. Molotsi Monyamane, Minister of Health, Hon. Mapalesa Mathokho, Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Letsie, Director General of Public Health Service in the Ministry of Health,Dr Malitaba Litaba, Leribe District Health Manager,the Principal Chief of Leribe as well as all members of the 11th Chinese Medical Team. Dr. Zou Ran, Leader of Chinese Medical Team signed with the Leribe District Health Manager Dr. Malitaba Litaba the Handover Certificate for the donation, which is worth over 300,000 Maloti.
Ambassador Sun said in his address that although nations are separated by borders, humanity has no boundaries. Countries and people may be rich or poor, but each person's right to basic health services should be equally guaranteed. Being a developing country itself, China fully understands the challenges and difficulties that African countries face in providing health services to their people. During the past 20 years, the Chinese Medical Team has provided services to over 500,000 local people. This donation is another testament of the solid friendship between the two countries and their peoples.
Hon. Monyamane and Hon. Mathokho expressed sincere gratitude to China for this generous gesture, and spoke highly of the friendship between the two countries and the remarkable contribution by the Chinese Medical Team. They also pointed out the donation will boost Leribe district hospital's capacity to better cater for the medical needs of the entire northern region, and thus reduce transfers of patients to Queen Mamohato Memorial Hospital.
