Ladies and Gentlemen,

Bo'me le bo'Ntate

Good Evening!

On the auspicious occasion of the celebration of the 50th birthday of H.M. King Letsie III, we are delighted to have the Shanghai University Art Troupe coming to visit the Kingdom of Lesotho and giving their performances here tonight, at the joint invitation by the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture of Lesotho.

The Troupe, which consists of 36 members from 4 universities in Shanghai, is led by my predecessor H.E. Mr. Gao Deyi, former Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho, who is now Deputy Director-General of the Education Commission of Shanghai Municipality.

They arrived in Maseru today, most of them this afternoon, from the City of Shanghai, China, after travelling over ten thousand kilometres across oceans and sky.

They come specially to share the joy and happiness with the Basotho people in celebrating H.M. King's Birthday.

They have brought with them sincere and best wishes of the Chinese people to Your Majesty for a happy and wonderful birthday, may you enjoy good health, happiness and longevity!

They also have brought with them goodwill and friendship of the Chinese youth and students, as well as the Chinese people towards the Basotho youth and students, and towards the Basotho people as a whole.

Now also, please allow me to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Chinese Government and people, all the staff of the Chinese Embassy in Lesotho, my wife and in my own name, to express our sincere and best wishes to Your Majesty for a happy birthday!

And our warm welcome and thanks to everyone presence here tonight.

And I know that members of the Art Troupe are still suffering from the jetlag, let's also give them a big hand of warm welcome, to wake them up!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As a Chinese saying goes: Friendship knows no distance, a thousand miles is but a heartbeat away. Although China and Lesotho are separated geographically far apart, both peoples live just like close neighbours. We share profound friendship with each other. The visit by the young students from Shanghai is just another good example.

I am happy to see that recent years have witnessed a sound momentum for development in China-Lesotho bilateral relations. We have maintained frequent high –level exchanges which helped deepen our mutual political trust. We have achieved fruitful results in our pragmatic cooperation in the fields of economic and trade, science and technology, education and human resources training, health and military affairs, etc.. People to people and cultural exchanges have become more frequent and closer. We have had good cooperation and coordination in helping and supporting each other on international affairs. I would say that China-Lesotho relations can be a good example in the relations between big and small countries, which is based on sincere cooperation and friendship, by treating each other on an equal footing, respecting each other, learning from each other and striving for win-win and common development.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

At present, the Chinese people, under the new central leadership headed by President Xi jinping, are striving hard to attain two centenary goals and Chinese dream of national renewal. To attain these goals, they need both peaceful domestic and international environments. They need cooperation, support and friendship from African people, Basotho people included, as well as the people of the world.

I hope that the visit and performances given by the students tonight will convey to you all the best wishes of the Chinese people for peace, happiness, friendship, cooperation, common development and harmony, and to show you the charm of Chinese Culture.

I am sure that this people to people and cultural exchange, which is the dialogue between hearts, will further help deepen the mutual understanding and friendship between our two peoples and the baton of friendship will be passed on from generation to generation.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

University is a place where new ideas and diversify culture converge. These young talented artists, though still studying in school, have already got a deep understanding of performing art, and some of them have even won fame and honour in the international contests. Tonight, they will not only give you performances full of Chinese quintessential cultural elements, such as Peking Opera, folk music, lion dance, acrobatics and martial arts, but also those African and Western songs and music. I believe their performances will bring everyone good time and entertainments. Please enjoy!

Before the conclusion of my remarks, I wish to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the government of Lesotho, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture for their kind invitation, and to Hon. Makabelo Mosothoane and Hon. Mamahele Radebe and their teams for the good cooperation and wonderful arrangements, without which this performance would not be possible.

Last but not the least, I wish to pay my respect to H.E. Gao Deyi, who is no longer in the post as Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho , but still keep the China-Lesotho friendship and cooperation in his heart. Salute, Ambassador Gao!

Finally, I wish the performance a success!

May Their Mejesties the King and the Queen enjoy happiness and good health!

May the Rt. Hon Prime Minister enjoy good health and happiness!

May China-Lesotho friendship ever lasting.

Thank you.

Khotso, Pula, Nala.
